- Star of the County Down- John McCormack- my favorite Irish love song. When I was in grade school, my parents were friends with the Quinns (the parents of Aidan Quinn who became a famous actor). I liked his sister. My family teased me by singing this song. My father was from Ireland and he loved to play John McCormack records.

- Garden where the Praties Grow - John McCormack. At my father's childhood home, the floor was made only of dirt. My dad had to work so hard to escape from poverty. When his plane landed in the United States he kissed the ground. He cried when he went into the first Cubs food store. He had never seen such abundance. His childhood family worried about starvation. He was only able to go to school because they allowed him in for free. He graduated as valedictorian and went on to become a great doctor in the USA. My mother used to take her shoes off when she walked to school because she only had one pair and didn't want to get them dirty. They both had such poor childhoods, that helped them to be happy, grateful adults.

- Down by the Sally Gardens - John McCormack - My father was from Ireland. He used to play John McCormack records. It was so much fun to visit Ireland. The Irish loved Americans. My uncle Peter in Tralee used to introduce us like this, "'ere's me cousins, the Yanks. There's me niece, she's a fine lass ain't she. And there's me namesake. I'm Peter the second and he's Peter the TURD." As you can imagine, my siblings had a field day with that one.
