Sin un amor - Jose Luis Rodriguez (JLR) con los Panchos. This combination just works. JLR has a great voice. Los Panchos have the perfect guitar background. Together they make some of the best old fashioned romantic music. I also love Los Panchos just by themselves. JLR is bold & flashy. Los Panchos by themselves have a comfortable, warmth.

Vuelvate la luna - Shaila Durcal --> This gorgeous woman sings about missing her boyfriend and how seeing the moon reminds her of their love. This a good song to hear the Spaniard accent.

El Malo - Aventura --> Aventura videos w/lyrics are easy to find. They are a great group with lots of pleasant love songs with well pronounced lyrics for advanced students of Spanish.

Besame mucho - -> this is the song that got me kicked in the shins. The lyrics are "besame, besame mucho" - "kiss me, kiss me a lot"-->At a Mexican Mariachi restaurant, my date said, "oh what a nice song. do you know the words." I replied, "yes, besame, besami culo (ass)". "You should sing along with the musicians. They like that." So she sings "kiss my ass" and the musicians start laughing. When she realized what happended, I ended up w/bruises on my shins and almost didn't get a kiss that night.

Obsesion - Aventura - awesome song. Aventura at their best. He wants to date her. She has a boyfriend. He is trying to convince her that he is better for her. It is a duet. Both voices are great. The female vocalist. That exact tone of a woman politely telling a guy that he is wrong and out of line. But she's not really mad. So he wonders. Is she just going thru the motions. At some level, does it seem that she is glad or at least flattered that I am interested in her. What to do? Back off now & you might lose her forever. Continue to pursue & she might really get mad, and ....... The music is great. The first link is to song w/lyrics. This is the English remix version of the song which is quite different & not that good in comparison w/the Spanish.

Volverte a Ver - Juanes--> Video w/lyrics. A soldier vows to return to his love. Excellent song for intermediate students of Spanish.

Para tu amor - Juanes --> video w/lyrics. A dippy love song. The kind girls like. For guys it is still a good one to practice Spanish. This is the sort of song that is played at high school graduation parties.

No Lo Beses - Alejandro Fernandez - Go Alejandro! This is it. It's now or never. You want passion, you got it. Video w/lyrics. . You could call it aggressive begging. Alejando makes it sound good. Alejandro reminds one of Arjona, but the lyrics are simpler than Arjona and spoken with a more aggressive tone. Arjona overwhelms the woman with a beautiful, elaborate guilt trip. Alejandro puts on a display of intelligent testosterone that says to her, "this is it, this is life. Can you honestly say that you don't want this. This is your last chance. Take it now or goodbye!"

Addicted to You - Shakira - Spanglish. Song is only so-so. This is a good one to challenge yourself when studying Spanish as an advanced student. The challenge is that it is such a fast song.

Por Que Te Marchas - Jennifer Lopez. She is pissed off at her boyfriend for leaving. Her voice is perfect. The band is perfect. A great song. She also sings very clearly such that it is easy to learn the Spanish.

No - Ednita Nazario --> She looks like my old girfriend and is always complaining about her man. No wonder I feel so comfortable with her. She is gorgeous and passionate.

Puedo - Ednita Nazario --> couldn't find the video. You can google the mp3. The mp3 is available Amazon.com for 99 cents. Ednita is the best female vocalist at cussing out her man. Jennifer Lopez is more feminine and sad. Ednita is more loud, tough and aggressive, but still feminine and adorable.

Despues de ti - Ednita Nazario --> She is pissed. "I'm going to throw your name to the dogs. You don't matter to me anymore. I just want to forget you." He better bang her tonight and get that oxytocin flowing or it's over.

La Tortura - Shakira y Alejandro Sanz --> great song. Great for lifting wts. Pheromone testosterone induction. Shakira has a hypnotic shake. Yes, that shake does come with some fries. "I've found my special purpose" (The Jerk).

Dame Una Noche - Don Miguelo, Monchy y Alexandra

Si Te Vas - Shakira - So-so song. The challenge again is that it's fast for studying Spanish.

La Paga - Juanes.--> Juanes is pissed off. Watch out! Lyrics are listed below the video. Juanes sings so clearly that one can hear every word pronounced. After listening to Juanes, if you love Spanish, you will probably become addicted to his music for a couple of months. He is the best male musician, singer, songwriter, guitar player in the world in any language.

Mala gente - Juanes --> If you thought he was mad in La Paga, check this out. This is as angry as Juanes gets. It is good practice for emotional Spanish. The pace of Mala Gente & La Paga is faster than in his happy, loving songs.

Mas - Nelly Furtado - This is a good song for beginning students of Spanish as the lyrics are clear and simple. This is the "whining, nagging girlfriend" song. She wants more, more more from her BF. Maybe he is just ignoring her because he wants her to breakup with him and that way she won't bother him anymore. He knows that if he breaks up with her she'll just get mad at him and keep calling him and whining and nagging.

Donde estan corazon - Enrique Iglesias. --> Enrique has a great voice. The video link here has both Spanish & English lyrics. Enrique is sort of bubblegum-teenybopper music in comparison with Juanes. Ie. Enrique's songs glorify hedonistic adolescent love. Juanes sings about love as it is between adult men & women with all its complexities, the egos, passions, frustrations, career influences etc.

No Te Mentia - Ednita Nazario --> I wasn't lying. I'm tired of waiting up late for you to come home. One more time I'm gone. Did you hear me? I wasn't lying. Gone! Gone! How could anyone cheat on Ednita. My dream woman.

Ella y Yo - Aventura --> Romeo's woman is cheating with his friend Don Omar. Romeo confronts him in a bar. Watch out. The studio version of this song is a lot better than the live version. Tu sabes bien - Ednita Nazario- she is sooo sad. Don't blame me, Ednita. I would never leave you. The album version sounds a lot better than the ones available on you tube. The last verse is one of the best in any love song. Her voice is perfect. PORQUE SERA QUE EL AMOR, EL AMOR ES COMO UNA OLA. CUANDO (LLEGA) TE BESA, TE ABRAZA, Y CON FACILIDAD TE ABANDONA Ednita sings with more emotional depth than JLO. JLO has a better band and musicians. JLO puts on a great show. Ednita makes it feel real. Like your girlfriend is in your face mad & "yes dear" isn't going to be enough. It is sort of like the difference between Diana Ross & Whitney Houston. Whitney has a great voice, "I will always love you, blah, blah, blah". But Diana Ross sounds more real, more sincere. like a real woman experiencing those emotions.

A happy kind of sad which recognizes the beauty and value of the depth of feeling. The kind of song where you think that they will get back together or at least be better in their next relationship.

Cuando Volveras - Aventura --> she left. why did she go? when will she come back? A great song. Beautiful. Hypnotic. It hurts so bad at least that's something. Better than her being gone altogether. Snap out of it already! You either need to guilt trip her into coming back (see Arjona) or ignore her & see if she comes back. Anger & resentment might just be disappointed love. Amores Lejanos - Enanitos Verdes--> long distance lovers. Long distance relationships are tough. It is not just emotional. It is also physical. The separation causes hormonal changes that are physically painful. I remember when I went off to college at Stanford and my girlfriend was still in her senior year of high school. I missed her sooo much. Stanford was a difficult school. Very competitive. I just studied & wrestled and did little else. How I looked forward to seeing her every couple of months. We went out for 9 years. She went to USC for college & then Juliard for graduate school for advanced piano studies. Given that she was a musician, we of course used the rhythm method. Muscians and doctors don't go together so well for marriage. They want to go out at night a lot and travel with the big shows eg. Le Mis. Doctors go to bed early and are always studying and working.

Dos Locos - Monchy y Alexandra --> they still love each other. Why then are they both with someone else? Because they're "dos locos", that's why. This is more Bachata music, in some ways similar to Aventura.

Quien - Ricardo Arjona --> Ricardo Arjona is the master at turning the tables with guilt trips. I admire any man that can give guilt trips to his woman instead of the other way around as happens to most of us. Most women are just emotionally superior to their boyfriends. They can make us tell the truth about anything. They can make us feel guilty about stuff we didn't even do. One book about male and female brains said that women have a 5 lane highway to process emotions while men only have a single lane country road with no shoulder. It is not fair! Well Arjona is the exception to the rule. He goes on & on about how lonely she made him with their beakup that you get the feeling that he is gonna guilt trip her into taking him back. Arjona is so good at emotionally manipulating the direction of a conversation, that I am reminded of Redd Foxx in the show, "Sanford & Son". Every time he didn't get his way he faked a heart attack, "ohhhh, this is the big one" while clutching his heart.

Si tu me dices ven - Los Panchos - Hopeful love is better than no love. A lot of good things come from hopeful love such as self improvement etc.

A ti - Ricardo Arjona --> Arjona is for advanced students only. If you are an intermediate student, push yourself. He is well worth it. His metaphors are complex and elegant. Romance for men is like the movie, "Groundhog Day".

Sin ti, sin mi - Ricardo Arjona --> The second video is the boxing ring. ¿Que estas haciendo tú, Que estoy haciendo yo? An ironic lament of love lost and the drift into empty loneliness. Arjona is so clever. He stirs up such complex, funny analogies.

Tocando Fondo - Ricardo Arjona --> he has made his apartment into a reclusive nation unto itself & he is touching bottom now that his woman has left him. Irony, sarcasem, guilt trips. Go Richard! Make her feel guilty! She'll come back.

Tampoco que se me muera mi vieja - nor do I want her to die. Pero yo se que el destino es asi.. - but I know that destiny is like that. Los caminos de la vida... - the paths of life. No son lo q yo esperaba - they were not what I expected. No son lo q yo creia...- they were not what I thought. No son lo q imaginaba - they were not what I imagined. Intelligent men are often very close to their mothers. My father was a bigshot psychiatrist. He was chairman of two departments. However, I learned my mother knew more about people than he did. He would say stuff like, "just go to the meeting and tell the truth. You are right and the group should follow the logic to this conclusion." I would take his advice and alienate people. No one cared that I was right. Decisions were made based on the local politics. My mother would say things like, "it is more important to stay friends than to argue about a silly little thing like that. Let it go. Forget about it. Just try to do a good job and be nice." She did everything for me. I owe my life to her. I have had a lot of sad moments in my life, but the saddest was the death of my mother. I cried for a year. I was angry with myself for not being able to save her. She was diagnosed with cancer when I was a 3rd year med student. I didn't know enough to help her until later when it was too late and she had metastatic disease.

Por el amor a mi Madre - los Azules --> another great song about a son's love for his mother. As he gets older he matures and realizes how much she has done for him. He vows to straighten out his life because of his love for her.

Amigo (father & son) - Roberto Carlos--> Video w/English translation. A song of appreciation for his father who stood by him thru thick & thin.

La Vida es un Ratico - Juanes --> Video with lyrics. This is one of the best love songs ever made about how a man feels about his family. A man wants to be a hero to his family. He devotes himself to his family and has to accept a lot of things in marriage that he doesn't want eg. a job that is not his first choice because it works out for the family. A smart wife will show him appreciation for this and he will serve her like a devoted servant. But if he doesn't feel appreciated, he will then begin to say to himself, "why should I endure unpleasant things for a woman who doesn't appreciate me". This leads to marital problems. Overall, Juanes is probably the best singer, songwriter, guitar player in the world. This is a beautiful song about trying to hold his family together as the pressures of careers & marital arguements threaten to lead to divorce.

A Dios Le Pido - Juanes --> an absolutely magnificent song of hope. A song about love of family and life. Juanes is such a positive force. Great for learning the Spanish subjunctive. Juanes is such a contrast to so much USA music. He is strong & proud and masculine. It's a celebration of life. Inspiring music.

El Amor Cura Todo- Juanes - from the recent album PARCE

En el campo - Javier Garcia --> a common daydream of moving to the country. Great song for practicing Future tense verb conjugations.

Mi Padre Me Ama - Juan Luis Guerra - an inspiring song & video. A father shares his strength with his handicapped son as they compete together in triathalons. It is good to see stuff like this. It makes you a stronger person.

Tough problems don't last, tough people do. My high school-college girlfriend once gave me a big lecture about how I needed to be more sensitive. I tried it for a month and she dumped me. I begged her to come back and she laughed in my face. Then I was embarrassed for begging her to come back. I vowed to never again let a woman get me to act that pathetic. A little pathetic sure. But not that pathetic.

I then decided to ignore her. Basically I changed from being oxytocin man to testosterone man. 3 months later she begged me to come back to her. I told her to go take a hike. Just kidding. I was in love with her. We went out for 6 more years after that.

Lo Que Paso, Paso - Daddy Yankee - more acoustic testosterone. I just feel stronger when lifting wts to this music. Its combines the aggression of war drums with the passion of a lover's spat. This is a good song to play when you are trying for a new wt lifting record.

Tortura - Shakira - The first video has lyrics. The second one has her dancing. Oh Boy! This is a hot one. Great for working out. What a torture it was to lose you. Now you want me to take you back. No way, etc. Humans do have instincts like animals. When Shakira dances a man feels as if he is pulled by a magnet, programmed to look. Men do this without even thinking about it.
